欧洲专利局（EPO）是根据欧洲专利公约，于1977年10月7日正式成立的一个政府间组织。其主要职能是负责欧洲地区的专利审批工作。

欧洲专利局现有19个成员国，分别是：奥地利、比利时、丹麦、法国、德国、希腊、爱尔兰、意大利、列支敦士登、卢森堡、摩纳哥、荷兰、葡萄牙、瑞典、瑞士、西班牙、英国、塞浦路斯、芬兰。该局的4041名工作人员来自以上国家。该局的工作地点分布在德国的慕尼黑、荷兰的海牙、奥地利的维也纳以及德国的柏林四个城市。该局机构的主体部分及多数工作人员集中在慕尼黑和海牙，慕尼黑有1830人，海牙有1681人。欧洲专利局是世界上实力最强、最现代化的专利局之一，拥有世界上最完整的专利文献资源，先进的专利信息检索系统和丰富的专利审查、申诉及法律研究方面的经验，在文献收集、检索及审查员培训方面对中国知识产权局提供过很多帮助。另外，在文献及信息产品方面两局也有广泛的交流。

The PATENTSCOPE database provides access to international Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications in full text format on the day of publication, as well as to patent documents of participating national and regional patent offices.  The information may be searched by entering keywords, names of applicants, international patent classification and many other search criteria in multiple languages.

Publicly funded science is an important step on the path to the development of technologies that can improve society. However, often the connection between science and impact isn't clear. One way is through the number of times they have been cited in the patent literature. Below we have three examples of Nobel Prize winners from the biological sciences and we've used The Lens to show data on how often their work has been cited in the patent literature.
